The Concert
Alexander Gadjiev battles extreme pianistic challenges to explore the idea of heroism in works by John Corigliano, Beethoven, Liszt and Chopin.
Three towering 19th-century pianist-composers – Beethoven, Liszt and Chopin – search for the hero inside, and Alexander Gadjiev, winner of the Sydney International Piano Competition and star of Storyville’s ‘Piano’, is the perfect protagonist in their quest.
In his Eroica Variations, Beethoven recycles a theme from The Creatures of Prometheus that he later uses in his ‘Eroica’ Symphony, originally dedicated to Napoleon. Liszt wrote Funérailles for friends killed in Hungary’s War of Independence. And Chopin’s lover George Sand nicknamed this Polonaise ‘Heroic’ for embodying the spirit of the French Revolution.
The concert begins with John Corigliano’s 1985 Fantasia. It’s a world away from the other works, but quotes Beethoven and Chopin. Like the three other works, it is based on the mesmerising musical device of the ostinato, setting the scene for a compelling programme.
Recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
