The Concert
Cellist Andrei Ioniță offers spiritual detox with the solitary beauty and humanity of two of Bach’s beloved cello suites.
Alone in the spotlight, a single cellist conveys the entire range of human experience – sorrow and love; doubt and hope; anxiety and peace. J S Bach shares his musical vision of what it is to be alive – alone, but part of something greater.
The simple appeal of Bach’s melody, rhythm and harmony is deceptive, though: these six-movement works are some of the most technically demanding of the cello repertoire, stretching the limits of what one musician can create with four strings. Romanian cellist Andrei Ioniță, former winner of the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition, is well qualified to reveal Bach’s aspirations.
Written more than three hundred years ago and saved for posterity thanks to copies made by Bach’s wife Anna Magdalena, these much-loved works still speak to us today and offer a still moment to contemplate past, present – and future.
Recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
Please note that these events are recorded for broadcast. We are grateful to all of our audience members for ensuring that noise and disturbance are kept to a minimum, and for switching off phones and devices.
