Folk songs, fantasies and visions of romance: a Spanish journey with a French twist, in the company of cellist Alban Gerhardt and pianist Steven Osborne.
The Programme
No string instrument sings as soulfully as the cello – or has quite so many stories to tell. In both France and Spain, it’s given voice to ancient sorrows and romantic dreams. In this wonderfully characterful recital, music by Debussy and Ravel throws fabulous, flickering shadows across the soundworlds of Manuel de Falla and the great Catalan cellist-composer Gaspar Cassadó. Expect visions of fools and folksongs; moonstruck harlequins and fantastic dances.
The Performers
And expect unparallelled insights from cellist Alban Gerhardt and pianist Steven Osborne – two artists whose passion for musical exploration is matched only by the brilliance and intelligence of their artistry. ‘I treat any piece as a new piece that has been written for me’, says Gerhardt; and this concert should be a true adventure for the imagination.
Recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3
