Tension. Adventure. Wit. Violinist Christian Tetzlaff and pianist Kiveli Dörken explore sounds of light and shadow: music by Bartók, Webern and Beethoven.
The Programme
Art never stands still, and even the simple pairing of a violin and a piano can create new worlds. Webern’s exquisite miniatures contain infinities, while Bartók’s fiery sonata distils the sounds of his native Hungary into music as restless as the 20th century itself. And Beethoven’s luminous Sixth Sonata never sounds any less inventive or fresh: strong words, softly spoken.
The Performers
In other words, this music could have been written for violinist Christian Tetzlaff and pianist Kiveli Dörken – two musical friends with a shared commitment to putting the composer, and the music first. ‘You can say a million different things in the same dynamic,’ says Tetzlaff. ‘Sometimes, the closer you look, the more radical the music becomes.’
‘In order to feel the true vitality of music, you must have lived it’ – composer Béla Bartók
Change of Performers and Programme
We were deeply saddened to learn of the death of pianist Lars Vogt, who was originally due to perform in this concert alongside Christian Tetzlaff.
